Lawn bowls is played by millions of people around the world, with dedicated and amateur players alike. It also has a global TV audience, and has grown through new territories and countries in recent decades. Despite the misconception that it’s played exclusively by older generations, it also attracts younger demographics.

In fact, in 2019, Meghan Markle became a fan of the sport after watching a game from her Frogmore Cottage window. She was so captivated that she went to talk to the players, who were playing next door to her Windsor estate home. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams even asserted that Markle’s interest could encourage others to become interested in the sport. Only time will tell.

Bowls Schedule

There’s plenty of bowling action all year round, as you’ll see from our calendar above. The UK bowling fixtures include the Felixtstowe Open and the Maccabi Lawn Bowls Championship. Bowling is also a part of the Commonwealth Games, with the latest event taking place in Birmingham from Jul 28 – Aug 8, 2022. The next Commonwealth Games event is set to happen in New Zealand in 2026.

The premier international bowls competition is the World Bowls Championship, held every four years. Of course, there’s also the World Indoor Bowls Championships, which takes place every year.

Most winners are from either England or Scotland. And there’s the rival World Bowls Indoor Championships, which was to commence in April 2020, but was postponed until late 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Depending on the format, you can expect a game of lawn bowls to last between one and a half hours and three hours.
